Special Issue on Software-defined Storage for Big Data
Frontiers of Computer Science (FCS), 2016
This special issue aims to publish the latest progress in software-defined storage for big data. Big data requires cost-efficient storage services in capacity, query, security and backups. The related topics are important. The future infrastructures to support big data analytics consists of data centers and cloud computing, which are becoming software defined. Software-defined storage (SDS) is a data storage scheme that leverages data storage software to manage storage-related tasks separated from the physical hardware devices. Software-defined storage leverages storage virtualization to provide storage management for various storage services, including deduplication, replication, backup and recovery.
Topics of interest include but are not limited to:
Software-defined storage protocols
Software-defined storage devices for data centers
Non-volatile storage support for cloud computing
Deduplication for data backups
Data collection and analytics for system optimization
Software-defined non-volatile storage devices
Caching, replication, and consistency in cloud storage
Software-defined storage virtualization
Security in software-defined storage
Data protection in software-defined storage
Power-aware storage architectures
Software-defined storage for database
RAID and erasure coding in software-defined storage
Solid state storage technologies
Software-defined storage support for reliability, availability and disaster recovery
Programmable interfaces in software-defined storage
User studies and experiences of real-world applications
Important Dates:
Paper submission due: January 20, 2016 (Extended to January 27, 2016)(Submissions will be evaluated in batches on a "first-come-first-served" basis. Review results will be notified afterward.)
First-round review due: March 20, 2016

Submission Guidelines:
The submitted papers will be evaluated based on their originality, presentation, relevance and contributions, as well as their suitability to the special issue. The submitted papers must be written in English and describe original work that has not been published nor currently under review by any journals and conferences. Previously published conference papers should be clearly identified by the authors at the submission stage and a summary of changes should be provided about how such papers have been significantly changed and extended to be considered for this special issue. Papers that either lack originality, clarity in presentation or fall outside the scope of the special issue will be rejected without reviews.
Submissions need to conform to the layout, format and page limits in FCS. The submitted papers will be reviewed by at least three independent reviewers. Final decisions will be approved by the journal editors. Manuscripts need to be prepared for publication according to the journal’s Author Guidelines available at: FCS.
